Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA),
We, the undersigned, are Lyft and Uber drivers who are uniting to end the deplorable and shameful working conditions on LAX premises.
We ferry thousands of passengers to and from LAX non-stop throughout the day, without a safe and hygienic restroom to relieve ourselves or wash our hands while on the job. We work long hours and deserve better than the six foul-smelling and fly-ridden port-a-potties available to us at the nation’s 2nd busiest airport.
Many of us would rather risk bladder infections by holding it in for long periods of time, than to use the unsanitary facilities available to us on LAX property. This is simply unacceptable and disgraceful for an airport that brings in billions in revenue.
Because our employers, Lyft and Uber, have been able to get away with unlawfully classifying us as “independent contractors,” they’ve been able to conveniently wash their hands of any responsibility to provide the basic workplace protections and humane conditions that every employee is entitled to — like Cal/OSHA compliant restrooms.
That’s why we’re calling on you, LAWA, to provide safe and hygienic restrooms with potable water at LAX — like the ones used by LAWA executives and our passengers.
This is not just about our health and safety, it’s a matter of dignity. Don’t treat us like third-class citizens — we’re first-rate professionals that are crucial to LAX’s growth and success.
Stand with us, and set the health and safety standards that we need at LAX.
